Using the AIX diagnostics to install the server firmware fix through AIX

Use this procedure if you want to use the AIX® diagnostics to install the server firmware fix through AIX to the temporary side of the service processor.

To install the server firmware fix using the AIX diagnostics, follow these steps:

  1. Choose from the following options:
    • If you need to place the fix image on a CD, continue with step 2.
    • If you plan to install the fix from your hard drive, continue with step 3.
  2. Perform the following steps:
    1. From a computer or server with an Internet connection, go to the Fix Central website.
    2. From the Product Group list, select Power.
    3. From the Product list, select your Machine Type-Model.
    4. From the Select from Machine Type-Model list, select the required fix and click Continue.
    5. Follow the on-screen prompts to download the RPM file.
    6. Do you have an installation of any of the following operating system versions?
      • AIX Version 7.2 with the 7200-05 Technology Level, or later
      • AIX Version 7.2 with the 7200-04 Technology Level, and Service Pack 3, or later
      • AIX Version 7.2 with the 7200-03 Technology Level, and Service Pack 6, or later
      • AIX Version 7.1 with the 7100-05 Technology Level, and Service Pack 7, or later

      Yes: You do not need to extract the RPM file. Follow the instructions for your CD program to place the .rpm image on the CD. Then, continue with step 3.

      No: Continue with step 2g.

    7. On the computer or server, extract the RPM file.
    8. Follow the instructions for your CD program to place the extracted fix image on the CD.
    9. Continue with step 3.
  3. At the AIX command prompt, enter the following:
    diag
  4. Initialize the terminal type, if requested.
  5. On the function selection screen, select Tasks and Service Aids.
  6. On the task selection screen, scroll to the bottom of the list of options, and select Update and Manage Flash.
  7. Select Validate and Update System Firmware, and press Enter.
    Note: If you receive a message stating: This partition does not have the authority to perform the requested function, see Message regarding a server that was previously managed by an HMC.

    During the server firmware installation process, reference codes CA2799FD and CA2799FF are alternately displayed on the control panel. After the installation is complete, the system is automatically powered off and powered on.

  8. Choose from the following options:
    1. If the fix file is located on a CD, continue with step 9.
    2. If the fix file is located on your hard drive, perform the following steps:
      1. Select File System.
      2. Enter the fully qualified path name of the file with the flash update image. The file will be copied to the /var/update_flash_image directory.
      3. When finished, select Commit. The server firmware level that you selected will be installed on the temporary side. This ends the procedure.
  9. Insert the CD that contains the .img or .rpm update file into the media drive on your server and select Removable Media.
    Note: If you receive a message stating: This partition does not have the authority to perform the requested function, see Message regarding a server that was previously managed by an HMC.
  10. Select the appropriate device and press Enter.
  11. Press F4 (Display). A list of firmware fix image files is displayed.
  12. Select the .img or .rpm file that is similar to 01AL730_154_035.rpm.
  13. Press F7 (Commit). The server firmware level that you selected will be installed on the temporary side. This ends the procedure.
