Getting server firmware fixes through IBM i for a system not managed by a management console

Learn how to obtain server firmware fixes and operating system fixes at the same time through IBM® i if you do not have a management console.

Installing the server firmware fixes through the operating system is a disruptive (nonconcurrent) process.

Notes:
  • If your system is managed by a management console, you must apply server firmware through the management console. For details, see Managed system updates.
  • If you have a Virtual I/O Server that is managed by an Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM), you need to obtain fixes through the IVM.
Important: Do not interrupt this process after you begin.
  1. Is your IBM i system or logical partition connected to the Internet?
    • Yes: Continue with step 2.
    • No: Order the fix on CD. For details, perform the following steps:
      1. Go to the IBM i Knowledge Center website http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i and select from the following options:
        • If you select V7R2, expand IBM i 7.2 Knowledge Center.
        • If you select V7R1, expand IBM i 7.1 Knowledge Center.
      2. Expand IBM i and related software > Maintaining and managing IBM i and related software > Using software fixes > Ordering fixes.
      3. After you have the CD, continue with step 2.
  2. Use the IBM i program temporary fix installation functions on your service partition to install the server firmware fixes.
    • For details on using fixes, from the IBM i Knowledge Center expand IBM i and related software > Maintaining and managing IBM i and related software > Using software fixes.
    • For instructions on how to install the server firmware fixes along with IBM i fixes, from the IBM i Knowledge Center expand IBM i and related software > Maintaining and managing IBM i and related software > Using software fixes > Installing fixes.
    Note: When you shut down the IBM i service partition to install the server firmware fixes, system reference code D6xx430B or D6xx430A might be displayed for an extended period. The xx will increment periodically, and is a normal part of processing when server firmware fixes are being installed. Allow the server to complete the processing; do not interrupt this process.
  3. To verify that the fix is installed correctly, from the IBM i Knowledge Center expand IBM i and related software > Maintaining and managing IBM i and related software > Using software fixes > Installing fixes > Verifying fix installation.
