If you have IBM® i, you can download server firmware fixes and operating system fixes at the same time. However, if you have a Hardware Management Console (HMC), it depends on your system whether you can use the operating system or need to use the HMC.
If you have a POWER6® Power Systems™ server, you need to get firmware fixes through the HMC if you have one. If you have a System i® model and use an HMC, you can either get firmware fixes through the HMC or through IBM i. You will need to change the update policy to IBM i using the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).
